keyboard layout not being set automatically

philm suggested I post this here to take a closer look at it. https://forum.manjaro.org/index.php?topic=28026.msg235218#msg235218
Since the last update, I have no special signs on the numbered keys whilst holding Alt Gr key in the Spanish keyboard layouts. Hence, I have no @ sign. I looked in manjaro-settings-manager and they keyboard is almost generic USA with an tilde N. It seems to have reverted to mainly the USA layout with @ sign on shift+2 instead of Alt Gr+2
I just ran sudo setxkbmap es
and my keyboard is working again but it isn't being set automatically.
