What is "software mode"?

It doesn't seem to be documented, either here (Pamac's "Website" according to its About screen) nor on the Manjaro wiki. I would imagine it denotes a mode where hardware-accelerated rendering of Pamac's GUI is turned off, but given that Pamac's function is installing software, a "software" mode switch is, shall we say, a bit ambiguous.
